Gates is a Climatologist for the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments (GLISA) Program at the University of Michigan. In this role, Gates gathers and processes climate data in standardized outputs for GLISA staff, faculty, and students. Gates also provides consultation to partner organizations and stakeholders that are working with GLISA and mentors graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Michigan on their GLISA projects. Gates leads GLISA’s communication with tribal communities in the Great Lakes region as the tribal liaison, working to continue GLISA’s work with these communities and strengthen these relationships.
He also communicates GLISA’s work and conducts outreach and engagement through presentations at regional and national conferences and events. Gates has a Master of Science in Atmospheric Science and a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, both from the University of Michigan.
